So this is my latest project, a semi-tribal sphinx deck. I say "semi-tribal" because it has only sphinxes for creatures, but it's designed to be more of a classic control deck than a tribal aggro build, so there aren't a whole lot of creatures in here. The plan is to build up mana while controlling the board with coiuntermagic and sweepers until I can resolve some big flying beatsticks to win with. Early testing has been promising. I've played 3 games with it, won 2 and the third we had to pick up because the store was closing, but the deck was functioning well. The environment at my LGS is fairly cutthroat, so I'm looking for suggestions that are both thematic and powerful. Remember there will be no non-sphinx creatures. I understand that Sharuum is a fairly notorious general, but she's the logical choice for the deck. I don't have anything in here that really breaks her, so I'm hoping as people at the LGS become more familiar with the deck there won't be too much freak-out factor.

Beseech the Queen should probably be Diabolic Tutor. You'll probably be paying 2BB for it most of the time, and it's nicer to keep the information hidden, and not be restricted in your tutor targets.

Also, where's Isperia 1.0 at? Like, all your creatures fly. You just have to do some guessing, and really, that's the fun part.

Diabolic Tutor is already there. It's right below Beseech on the list.

My Ipseria 1.0 is in a box somewhere, because I am moving in the next week or so.

Would you say cut Beseech, add Isperia?

Wow, I am challenged today.

I would; you need more creatures. As written, your deck could maybe rely on getting 1-3 creatures out, including your general. Without Entomb or Buried Alive shenanigans with Sharuum, you're looking at a slow pace to win the game.
I would absolutely consider running Enigma Sphinx and perhaps Goliath Sphinx.

I had written off Enigma Sphinx because of the fairly high probability I would just flip a wrath effect off it, but maybe you're right. I'm not obligated to cast what I reveal, and it does recur itself, which is nice.

The Goliath I had cut for having no abilities other than being fat.

Flipping a Wrath is one of the best things you can do. Cascade triggers when the spell is cast, and then whatever you cascade into gets cast and put on the stack ahead of the original spell. The spell you cascaded into resolves, and then the original spell resolves. If you flipped a wrath, you'd have Enigma Sphinx, and no one would have anything else.

That being as it is, you still need some meat on this thing's bones. And, really, a 5 turn clock is better than most generals.

I was thinking more in terms of trying to develop my board, i.e. having more than one creature, at which point wrathing myself is pretty lame. That said, turning the sphinx into Reiver Demon is pretty sweet.

I see a few of your sphinx' have ETB effects, would a conjurer's closet go amiss. hell, it'd work great with sharuum alone. but getting multiple effects with uthuun and magister at least could give you the edge. and if it gets killed sharuum gets it back for ya.

That is an interesting thought. The first iteration of this deck had a bunch of planeswalkers in it. I actually won a game off of blowing the ultimate on Venser (with Rings of Brighthearth) and then casting Karn, then exiling everything in sight until my opponents capitulated. I decided to take it a different direction, but I wonder if Venser and Tamiyo might belong here anyways. I've gotten to use the ult on Tamiyo before, and it's just stupidly powerful. When cycling lands become "Pay X blue mana, draw X cards"... yeah. Pretty dumb.

He actually got cut for Isperia 1.0, since he only finds artifact creatures, which means he only gets;
Magister
Steel Wind
Sovereign
Sharding
and my general if she's tucked, whereas Isperia can tutor EVERYBODY, albeit slower.

Ok, but why not both?

Space. Aside from being the final frontier, it's what we never have enough of in EDH.

I guess. A relevant sphinx that tutors for effective kill-cards like Magister Sphinx or Steel Wind seems way better than a clunker like Gather Specimens.
